Der Lautenmacher by fresco-child Der Lautenmacher by fresco-child
A concept-driven illustration for The Perfectionist, an assignment for my Interpretive course. I chose to represent a lute-maker obsessively engaging in the minute details of his craft. Constructing an instrument requires great precision. Body shape, thickness of the wood and other physical properties are fundamental to ideal performance and acoustics.

P.S. I'm in the process of digitally correcting this scan to satisfy your request for a print :D.
I agree with yourself, Mo and Sabrina. This piece makes me want to drink tea by the fire and take out my (now sabotaged :P) Hildebrandt version of Pinocchio.

Thank you :). Yes, my heavy rendering gave an auxiliary layer to the 'perfectionist'--something done deliberately. During our class critique, I couldn't have anticipated that my lack of metaphor would somehow belittle my serene, literal interpretation. It was an open-ended concept with no specifications other than 'capture the essence of a perfectionist'.
I think we all managed to convey this punctilious, passionate character by way of diverse thinking. A project of this nature encouraged introspective thinking. Our own struggle for attaining perfection reflects rather closely.

something that i realized and wish i could have said during critique when you were called out on your rendering an such. although the concept was not as metaphorical, the fact that the image itself was done by hand and brought to such perfection and detail by hand traditionaly added a whole other layer to the piece.

hm, i think it should have a re-scan... theres a lot of lines and texture on top that shouldnt be there, it looked better in person.

you'ze got skills though, sista.

or was that a digital texture you threw on top? if so, i like it without.

It was the gesso coating underneath that created that horrible texture :(. It's apparent that I was using a broad brush. I'm afraid of having the image appear artificial with digital correction. Thank you nonetheless sista :)
